Terminology Update
tmask = Tattoo Mask Files

Inside the Tattoo Pipeline, tmask means the tattoo support files used alongside the main tattoo texture. When generating a tattoo, create the full set together: main_tattoo.png, design_mask.png (shader mask), and design_blur.png (blur mask). These are the PNG working files that can later be converted to design_mask.dds and design_blur.dds for game use. It does not mean a wearable luchador mask.

Black-and-white tattoo visibility mask. White or light grey marks the visible tattoo area; black marks hidden/transparent space.
design_blur.png
Softened blur/falloff file aligned to the tattoo mask. Used to reduce harsh sticker edges and help the tattoo blend cleanly.

TATTOO PIPELINE TERMINOLOGY

WWE 2K TECHNICAL RULES

WWE 2K brightens imported tattoos approximately 20–30% in-engine.

Compensate by:
- using darker midtones
- reducing bright whites
- avoiding overexposed highlights
- strengthening major silhouettes
- prioritizing large readable forms

DDS / BC7 compression safety:
- avoid pure white fills
- avoid single-pixel details
- avoid hairline cracks
- avoid tiny ornamental noise
- avoid micro-scratches
- minimum line weight must survive BC7 compression
- details must remain visible at medium camera distance
- large readable forms are better than excessive micro-detail

The tattoo should still look good when viewed at 25% size.

Style:

- dark overall appearance
- realistic healed tattoo look
- slightly aged, 2–5 years old
- no sepia
- no brown wash
- no parchment color
- no warm vintage filter
- heavy dark-grey shading
- smooth realism transitions
- bold readable linework
- deep black anchor shadows
- minimal pure white
- light grey instead of bright white
- texture-focused rather than art-print focused

Tonal distribution target:
- Pure Black: 5–10%
- Dark Grey: 45%
- Mid Grey: 35%
- Light Grey: 15%
- Pure White: less than 1%

Pure black is only for:
- deep eye sockets
- deepest folds
- silhouettes
- focal separation
- anchor shadows

Dark grey should dominate the tattoo.

Mid grey should build most shading and form.

Light grey should be used sparingly.

Pure white should be almost absent.

If unsure, choose dark grey instead of white.

Optional color accents:
- only deep dark red unless otherwise requested
- red must be realistic, muted, and dark
- no neon red
- no glowing red
- suggested dark red range: RGB 90–120 / 10–25 / 10–25

WWE 2K color optimization:
- colors should stay vivid in-game
- shadows should be slightly darkened

Avoid rectangular poster shapes.

Avoid placing the design on a fake arm.

Output only the tattoo artwork.

Composition flow:
- shoulder/top: largest focal subject
- bicep/upper arm: secondary major subject
- forearm: strong readable subject
- wrist/bottom: tapering transition elements

Good sleeve flow elements:

For sleeve flipping:

- same position, scale, rotation, and placement
- white or near-white = visible tattoo area
- black = hidden / transparent area
- medium grey only for controlled soft opacity if needed
- clean silhouette
- no color
- no texture details
- no background image
- no square border
- no unwanted white outline
- no noisy edge artifacts
- no compression garbage
- no grey haze across empty areas

Recommended values:
- tattoo body: white / near-white
- soft edge falloff: medium grey
- empty background: black

Purpose:
design_blur.png is the softened/falloff support file used as the blur mask source to reduce harsh tattoo cutout edges and prevent a sticker-like look.

Create design_blur.png as a softened version of design_mask.png.

Rules:
- same canvas size as the main tattoo texture
- same exact position, scale, rotation, and placement as design_mask.png
- black background
- soft white/grey blurred tattoo shape
- controlled blur only around the tattoo edge
- preserve the overall tattoo silhouette
- do not over-blur the shape
- no color
- no texture details
- no hard square border
- no halo that extends too far from the tattoo
- no muddy grey canvas background

For tattoo + tmask sets:
- main tattoo PNG, design_mask.png, and design_blur.png must align perfectly
- all files must use the same canvas ratio
- all files must use the same placement and scale
- all files must be DDS/BC7-safe
